The community of Starvation Lake helps fourth-grader Dawn Zonder clean and repair an old house, hoping that her family will find the money to be able to move in.
It was another perfectly awful day in Starvation Lake. The snowdrifts along the road were nearly as high as the school bus, but Dawn Zonder wasn't paying attention to the snow. And neither was anyone else on the bus. Even Elvera, the bus driver, was singing "On the Sunny Side of the Street" at the top of her voice.
Dawn had just returned from a visit downstate to see her mother in the hospital. Dawn was shy and hardly ever said anything, but this morning when she climbed into the bus, she couldn't wait to announce to everyone that her mother had a new heart. Her mother's old heart hadn't worked properly. "She's doing fine," Dawn said in her soft voice.
Dawn Zonder is finally starting to feel at home in Starvation Lake with all her new friends when she finds out she might have to move again. If only Dawn could convince her family to stay in Starvation Lake for good. But the only house the Zonders can afford is the old Grader place. It's more than just run down—it's haunted!
